Chapter 21
At the entrance to the dinner, an attendant showed Myrtle and Stanley to the same table they shared the first night, although tonight there were only three others. Shar, Alice and Andrew. The Ditzy Duo were dressed in the same frumpy pantsuits they wore the first evening. Andrew wore a crisp white shirt, black tie and pressed black slacks.
âStanley, we are so happy to see you! Safe and sound,â Shar said. Alice sat still. Andrew dipped his head at Myrtle and Stanley.
Myrtle smiled and made her excuses to get herself a wine and Stanley a beer. She reached for the wine, but before she brought it close to her, Denise came up behind and bumped into her. Déjà vu, but Myrtle was more attentive and only spilled the drink on the floor.
âStanley is back! That is so strange, isnât it? Did he tell you where he was?â
âNo, not really. Are you sitting with Dr. Manin this evening?â
âNo, Iâm at your table, Iâm afraid. I havenât seen much of him actually. Rumor has it that heâs got some other interest going on. No matter. Thereâs still Stanley.â
Myrtle faked a smile and returned to her seat determined to endure the show around her. The evening could have been a flash back to five days earlier. Denise followed her to their table and positioned herself to best flirt with Stanley. She giggled and complimented Stanley. He was flattered. Shar commented on the information sheâd learned from the different lectures. Alice and Andrew were quiet.
âSo you donât know where you were Stanley?â Denise asked.
âNot really.â
âWere they mean to you?â
âNo, itâs a long story, but no, everything was fine. Actually it was some sort of resort place. Swimming pool, golf course. Attendants everywhere. Great food and wine.â
âYou would think with that description and GPS tracking on your phone and being at an AI conference, someone would know where you were,â Shar said.
âIt would seem that the tracking was blocked. And there are tons of places in the valley that fit that description,â Andrew said.
Myrtle considered his comment. âMaybe so. But all the same, there is enough sophisticated technology and scientists here to figure that out. Someone should have known where he was. Real time. When I was concerned about Stanley, someone should have known something. Or this new technology isnât very good.â
âMyrtle was frantic, Stanley. Itâs so strange that they took you and then just returned you. Donât you think so, Myrtle?â Denise asked.
âI donât think anything.â Myrtle forced her lips to turn up and then she looked past the table occupants to survey the room. There were the usual crowd of nerdy scholars and a few pieces of arm candy. The head table people, Dr. Keppley and Dr. Manin had yet to arrive. She finished her glass of wine and flagged down a waiter to bring her another.
âPeople only take people for one of two reasons. Information or money,â Shar said.
âI canât believe that. Stanley doesnât have any money and certainly no information to pass along,â Denise said.
